Now this is what the New Year is All About

Starting the New Year on the right foot - Woodward has an all new storage organization system for maintenance supplies and is starting to implement bar code scanning.

Woodward is taking their New Year's Resolution and making it a reality - they are moving all of their supplies to a central location and tracking their inventory more accurately. Starting with plumbing and electrical supplies, all of the maintenance parts and supplies are being moved into their new home on central campus. The first floor of this building was vacated last year, and with new shelving units in place, the old receiving dock and surrounding first floor area is now being converted into a permanent stockroom location.

One whole end of the receiving dock has been converted to include shelves and bins to hold everything. They are in the process of being labeled and bar coded. There will be a 3-ring binder with bar coded part numbers so workers can use a hand-held scanner to check out their parts. It is hopeful that this will increase accuracy when it comes to tracking usage quantity.

It is their goal using MAPCON CMMS to keep track of their supplies while they maintain this facility which is spread out over a large area, with many buildings and dorms to keep track of.

Woodward Resource Center helps out Iowa families with children or adults who have intellectual disabilities and who still need a place to live while receiving special care. The "Grandfather of MAPCON" passes away at 89

It is with a heavy heart that we announce Jack Meadow passed away at age 89. Known to many long-time users of MAPCON Professional as "The Grandfather of MAPCON", Francis Jackson "Jack" Meadow passed away November 7th, 2011. He was a devoted husband and father who cared immensely for his family.
Jack served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during WW2 in Europe and Japan. After working for Dupont in management and maintenance for many years, he became the original developer of one of the very first computerized maintenance programs ever (MAPCON), which is still a leader in the industry and going strong. Jack was a brilliant man and will be greatly missed.

Hold the Phone! MAPCON is getting Smarter

We have started development on a Smartphone App for MAPCON and it is coming along very well and pretty fast. This app will be intended to run on the IPhone, Android, Windows Phone Mango and maybe even Blackberry. The capabilities will be the same as our PocketMaint module and will actually be bundled with this module for MAPCON On-Demand and Enterprise. We may add a few management type features like work and purchase order approvals. Unfortunately since this will depend on Web Based technologies, Smartphone capabilities will not be available for MAPCON Professional or MAPCON Lite. We hope to have our first release ready by the end of the year barring any unforeseen hurdles. This is all cutting edge technology, which means it is new, so hurdles could definitely pop-up. This new app works on iPad and Android Pads as well !!

Fighting Irish Tackle Their Maintenance Program

The University of Notre Dame is one of the nation's most prestigious Catholic universities located north of the city of South Bend, Indiana. Established back in 1842, the "Fighting Irish" are very well known for their sports programs, especially their football team which has 11 national championships and 7 Heisman Trophy winners.

The Notre Dame power plant has recently started using MAPCON On-Demand, our web-based maintenance software package, to track the PM work on their steam traps and valves. Literally hundreds of valves need constant monitoring to ensure there are no cracks that can cause major problems down the road.

They have also been working diligently on pulling together a list of spare parts that will be imported in the system from an Excel spreadsheet, even hiring temporary help to assist in the data collection. Already over 300 vendors have been imported, complete with contact names and addresses.

Getting a handle on their spare parts is a high priority, and they are well on their way to becoming more efficient in that regard. The parts list will turn into a Bill of Material list for the equipment so they know exactly where everything goes.

Joseph Herman, Notre Dame Maintenance Manager, was able to attend our MUG conference this year, and he brought along his lovely wife Nancy. They both had a great time, and we hope to see them again next year.

User-defined checklists, which conveniently embed within the PM Work Order, are used to "sign-off" on specific ride maintenance tasks. Each technician completes their own scheduled ride maintenance check-list and the name and date is recorded along with each safety and regulatory entry. Using these checklists ensure compliance. Reports are then sent to department managers for review. Unscheduled work will be tracked by in-bound calls to a centralized dispatch who in turn will distribute work orders using the MAPCON maintenance management software. The work will be returned back to dispatch for completion within the MAPCON PM software.

Green Plains Otter Tail Location Picks MAPCON CMMS

Yet another ethanol plant in the Green Plains Renewable Energy company recently joined the MAPCON family. We welcome them as a new customer and thank them for their choice in maintenance management software. Otter Tail is a 60 million gallons per year (MMgy) plant located in Fergus Falls, MN. We are a good fit for Otter Tail as eight sister ethanol plants in five separate States currently use us as their CMMS. Another reason MAPCON CMMS is effective is because Otter Tail uses a good portion of the product. Not just for maintenance management, MAPCON is a versatile CMMS.

All Green Plains ethanol plants make effective use of purchasing, inventory, vendor relations and cost tracking. Alaska Hydropower Agency working with MAPCON

SEAPA (Southeast Alaska Power Agency) manages two hydropower utilities supplying electricity to three cities in SE Alaska. The people of Wrangell, Petersburg and Ketchikan are able to flip a switch and electricity is provided. The operators, mechanics and electricians maintaining the power source equipment and facilities are helped by their daily use of MAPCON Maintenance Software. Smart to use Smart Numbers

Can't find the spare part? Not even sure what it looks like? Challenges like this can be simplified by using a smart numbering system, and linking pictures to inventory items in MAPCON Maintenance Software.

Customer Focus

Nebraska Corn Processing, located in Southwestern Nebraska, is an ethanol plant that has recently gone through a shut down, a change of ownership, and is now up and running again. The new maintenance planner, Allan Peters, used MAPCON maintenance management software before at another ethanol plant where he used to work. He is now looking forward to running MAPCON Maintenance Software in a more efficient manner than before, starting with inventory numbering.

Smart Numbers

Using a smart numbering system, the workers will be able to identify spare parts much more quickly than before. Using a combination of 4 letters and 4 numbers, workers will know what they are looking for just by the number itself. An example is a bearing, which will be listed as BRNG-0001 or a small replacement motor which is MOTR-0005. Like parts will be stored together on shelves, so if the one you need is out, an alternate could be close by. Planning the parts on the work order, and having the letters in front will let everyone know what they need at a glance before going out to the job site and will eliminate wasted trips back and forth to the warehouse.

These four letters will become standardized, and over a brief period of time the workers will learn what each code stands for. The 4 numbers are just the next one in sequence to keep it simple, and parts can also be located by cross-referencing the vendor's part number or the manufacturer's item number.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Using a digital camera, pictures will be taken, downloaded, and linked to spare parts in MAPCON Maintenance Software so workers know what they are looking for. Is it made of rubber or stainless steel? Is it short or long? Reviewing their list of parts and knowing what they need before starting the job will eliminate time spent wandering aimlessly through the warehouse looking for who knows what.

Allan is looking forward to jumping into MAPCON maintenance software and making his maintenance process more efficient. He can already foresee the benefits of using a combination of a smart numbering system and pictures, and can hardly wait to start realizing the cost savings of playing it smart.

Centralia City Light chooses MAPCON for its Maintenance Software

Centralia City Light produces electricity for the city of Centralia, located in Washington state about half-way between Portland and Seattle. They recently installed MAPCON Professional, the premier maintenance management software, to help them keep the equipment running so customers don't lose power due to repairs.

Not surprisingly, their biggest concern is the huge trees that grow in the Pacific Northwest. Heavy winds can knock them over, and power lines get taken down. Although they can't do anything about mother nature, they can ensure their huge generators remain operational and MAPCON Pro preventive maintenance software will help them do that.

The generators are located at the Yelm Hydro Plant about 45 miles from Centralia. The Nisqually river supplies the power via a 9-mile canal, and their dam and gate system help harness nature's energy. With over 3,000 street lights to maintain, it's a big job to monitor the generation of electricity, transmission lines, and the distribution system. Built in 1929, the power plant can currently generate 12 megawatts of power.

They didn't have a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) in place before MAPCON Pro. In fact, there were no formal equipment numbers identifying the equipment. With the help of MAPCON Technologies' implementation specialist, they developed a numbering schema for the equipment and have already started creating preventive maintenance (PM) procedures. They are well on their way to being able to track the repair history on the equipment.
