Security Example

The best way to demonstrate the workings of the security system is to provide an example that can be used in the actual application.

Security can only be administrated if you are logged in as Administrator.  Security applies to live data only.  You can not implement security on the training database.  The Administrator password was disclosed at the time of purchase and can be changed.  The Administrator automatically has full rights to set security for all Menu Items and Components that were designated by Mapcon Technologies, Inc. as being securable.   In general, these are the Menu Buttons on the initial screen and other items on secondary screens, such as the Employee Pay Rates on the Employee screen.

Document security requirements first

You should document your security requirements before attempting to implement security.  Document menu level security first.  As much security as possible should be established at the menu level.  For example, only selected Employees should have access to administrative functions.  The Administrative Icon should be disabled on the initial screen.

Next, document the type of security that should be established for each Component.  Each Screen contains Components (such as Edit Boxes, Data Grids, Labels, Group Boxes etc.) that are used to display and change information.  For example, Employee Pay Rates might be contained in Edit Boxes that receive data from an Employee Table.  These Edit Boxes are, in turn, contained in a Payroll Information Group Box.  Not all Users who have been given rights to view the Human Resource Screen should be able to see the Pay Rates.  The text in the Pay Rate Edit Boxes can be made invisible based upon Security Codes assigned to the User.  Or, the Payroll Group Box could be made invisible.

Design Security Codes that satisfy the documented security requirements.

Create Security Codes that will enable you to implement the security restrictions that were defined previously.  As you recall, Security Codes consist of two parts: a Security Category and a Security Level.  A User's Security Codes will be matched against the Security Code assigned to Security Options that are attached to Menu Picks and Component.  If the User has a Security Code that matches the Security Code attached to the Security Option and if the Security Level of the matched Security Code is equal to or exceeds the Security Code of the Security Option, then the Security Option will be in effect.

Let s try to implement the simple security as described above.

Log into the system using the Administrator ID.

Click on the Administration Icon, then the Initialization and Utilities Button, followed by the System Initialization Button.

Disable Security and close the screen.
